Overview of Success Stories

We have had over 3000 interns during our Program's fifteen-plus years.

Here are just a few success stories. Their common thread is that each student intern started out by formulating a career dream, then set out to discover ways to make it happen.

. An intern with a Japanese-owned firm in San Diego was sent to Tokyo during his internship, eventually being hired by the firm full-time. He now exports American clothing to Japan through a company he has founded.

. A business networking organization accepted one of our interns, who then met an executive for a high tech biomedical products firm in San Diego. Upon graduation, he was hired by this firm and now has a management position in their San Francisco office.

. A Spanish-speaking intern happened to meet the owner of a growing Mexican construction firm in a hotel lobby. The student suggested an internship and began immediately, traveling to Mexico City to help negotiate contracts. He was eventually hired full-time by the firm.

. An intern for a commodities broker is now successfully employed downtown after he received his broker's license and built up a client base during his internship, so that he could begin receiving lucrative commissions as soon as he graduated.

. Several students contacted resort businesses in Europe, the Caribbean, and Central America, arranging summer internships while developing expertise in the travel industry.

. A student interested in a career in Europe identified firms of interest in San Diego, and approached a Swiss-owned freight-forwarding firm. He was eventually hired full-time for the Los Angeles office, with the possibility of a foreign assignment in the future.

. An intern at KPBS on the SDSU campus developed his communication skills, ability to research issues, and an interest in public policy, eventually deciding to attend law school and become a practicing lawyer.

. Students with strong interests in sports industries approached successful local firms that manufacture and sell golf products or surfing products, where they worked on internships that became career positions. Even the professional sports teams in our city have offered marketing internships to students who helped expand ticket sales into the Tijuana market.

. A local manufacturer of high technology electronics products sold worldwide contacted us about the possibilities of taking on an intern. Within two years, three of our interns have been offered full-time positions with this growing company.

. An economics major with an affinity for computer work contacted Sun Systems , and entered their summer internship program in northern California. He was paid to work in their training program for the summer.

. A shy student whose second language was English was hesitant about his speaking skills. On his internship in a sales office, he learned to utilize both of his languages successfully in telephone conversations with clients, and felt confident entering his communication skills his resumé as one of the most valuable assets he offered.

. An intern for the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. worked with several successful business persons on their Board, including a Rockefeller representative, and was offered opportunities to consider several starting positions with a variety of major east coast businesses.
